The funniest aspect of life is oneās sureness of something. When weāre young, we have no limitations because the world hasnāt made us cynical yet (if ever). When weāre old, weāve seen it all and critique based on our own personal experience of what is ātruth.ā
If youāre reading this, I hope you never become that cynical version of yourself. You are not āold man yells at cloud,ā but rather, someone who is, and always will be in the process of, finding your way.
But oneās career can be fickle, I know. I graduated from university into a pretty terrible job market and have witnessed multiple āonce in a lifetimeā bad job markets since. I recently had a conversation with other designers regarding the security of a full time position versus the peaks and valleys of working as a freelancer. We struggled to really grasp why a full time position feels secure when month after month, it feels like layoffs are happening everywhere.
So, why the optimism?
The optimism comes because, in this world, thatās the only way to be. This is no allusion to Sisyphus and his rock, but rather, an ask to view your career as not a series of checkpoints ā how you need to obtain a certain rank or title by a certain time ā but as a continuous passage of learning and growth.
Another Greek (this one real) named Heraclitus famously said A man cannot step into the same river twice. Why? The river changes. We, too, change. Your career successes should encourage, but shouldnāt discourage you from seeking even more, just as your career failures and setbacks do not define you.
Wherever you are in your career, you got this.
