As a kid, I used to play with tools like Photoshop to make cool stuff. I remember learning what a layer was and using that to color in superheroes I would create.
But hey, I had no intention of turning that into a job.
Design should be fun. Yes, there are business goals. Yes, there is an incentive to improve a user’s experience, but let’s never forget that the whole reason we all started in this field in the first place is to be creative (except those of you that jumped into a 10 week bootcamp solely to make money. You guys — I cannot help). And creatively thrives when we are freeflowing our ideas and making mistakes.
One of the biggest concerns of the design community is how AI is going to play a role in disrupting our lives. Sure, it can help, but it adds a layer of uncertainty that scares a lot of people.
My advice. Use AI for fun. Get acquainted to it that way. Don’t worry so much about implementing it into your process just yet. First, use it for processes that are more fun than anything.
A trend that has been going around Linkedin lately is making yourself into a toy (I believe maybe it was Chris Nguyen who started this, but I could be mistaken). This is an excellent way of trying out something like ChatGPT, but not having the burden of having to get it right. After all. It’s all about having fun.
