A lot can change in a week. Last week, I wrote about how AI can make design fun. This is true, as many of us in the design community had fun with the new trend to make ourselves into toys in original packaging.

At the same time, a new trend has arrived on ChatGPT — in a matter of minutes, anyone can take a pre-existing photo and turn it into a Studio Ghibli style illustration. The movie studio, behind the genius of Hayao Miyazaki has created films like Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle. The animation has a very distinct style that, unlike a lot of animation created today, has been done with care and love. You can see it in the art.

So now, this creates a problem, considering a new ChatGPT function allows anyone to create this style in a matter of minutes. This means some artists’ thousands of hours of work on some of people’s most beloved movies can be reduced to something AI can do simply without any effort.

There is some more work that needs to be done in terms of what AI should be allowed to do OR what kind of credit can go to creators. I have tried to Ghibli filter. It’s incredible. But will trends like this kill the creativity of more artists, musicians, and more in the future? Is this one step in the future of man relying on artificial intelligence to do something that, at one point, was a labor of love for so many?

Only time will tell.
